September Lavender Library: This Is How You Lose the Time War
Love letters. Rival agents. Impossible choices. A romance written across time itself.
Problem: There weren’t enough local queer-centered book clubs. Solution: We started one.
This September, Lavender Library is diving into This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone – a breathtaking novella where two rival agents on opposite sides of a war spanning centuries begin exchanging secret letters. What starts as playful taunts slowly transforms into something far more dangerous: trust, vulnerability, and an extraordinary love story that refuses to stay within the lines history has written for it.
Whether you found yourself captivated by the poetic prose, fascinated by the world-building, or simply wondering, “…wait, what just happened?” – you’re in good company. Together we’ll explore the novel’s themes of identity, belonging, choice, intimacy, and what it means to build connection in a world determined to keep us apart.
As always, Lavender Library isn’t about having the “right” interpretation or remembering every plot detail. You don’t have to finish the book – or even love it – to join the conversation. This is a gentle, neurodivergent-friendly discussion space built around curiosity, thoughtful conversation, and connecting through stories that stay with us.

The Deets: Lavender Library is a welcoming community discussion space centered around queer readers, thoughtful conversation, and stories that challenge, comfort, and inspire us. Whether you’re a lifelong science fiction fan or simply curious about one of the most celebrated queer novellas of the last decade, we’d love to have you join us.

Our community thrives in a space where countless delightful interactions could happen, but none are obligated to occur. Think of it as “high possibility, low expectations.” Outside of our general requirements of respect, you are under no obligation to interact with anyone in any particular way.
