Music to Change Your Life: Global Perspectives and Genre-Inclusivity
Music has a way of reaching us when words can’t. It can make us dance, cry, rage, heal, remember, connect, and sometimes change how we understand ourselves and the world around us.
Join us at AP for Music to Change Your Life, a community-centered listening and discussion experience exploring music across genres, cultures, languages, and lived experiences. Whether you’re passionate about music, have a few favorite songs that mean everything to you, or simply want to discover something new, there’s a place for you here.
For our first session, we will explore the importance of genre-inclusivity, global music perspectives, and approaching musical expression with curiosity rather than judgment. Drawing on her experiences as a musician and her engagement with creators from around the world, Dee will introduce a few artists and songs that have shaped her relationship with music, sharing why their work matters to her. Then, we’ll open the floor to you!
Bring a song, an artist, a genre, or a musical experience you’d love to share. We’ll listen together, exchange perspectives, and explore what makes music meaningful to each of us. Think of it as a musical conversation: listen, reflect, discuss, and repeat.
This is a listen-and-not-judge space. There are no wrong answers, no guilty pleasures, and no expectation that everyone will connect with the same music. We celebrate the ways our identities, cultures, histories, and emotions shape what we hear and how we experience it.
Some music may explore emotionally intense themes, including grief, anger, trauma, loss, and resistance. We’ll provide content warnings when appropriate, and participants are always welcome to step away, take a break, request a musical palate cleanser, or rejoin whenever they’re ready. Your comfort and autonomy matter.
This event is 18+.
What to expect:
– Music from different genres, cultures, languages, and global perspectives.
– Opportunities to share your favorite artists and meaningful songs.
– Open, judgment-free conversations about music and emotion.
– A flexible, low-pressure environment where listening is just as valuable as speaking.
– Captions or accessible lyrics where available, with efforts to prepare accessible song content in advance.
– No musical expertise, preparation, or particular taste required.
– Participate as much or as little as you’d like. You don’t even need to bring a song. Just bring yourself, an open mind, and a willingness to listen.
We don’t judge. We feel together. 🎶💜

VOLUNTEERS
We LOVE volunteers! Join our team of community volunteers, and you will find new friends, a support system and a tight knit center of empowerment. Once you have obtained membership as above, please check out the volunteering section of The Autonomy Project website.
By volunteering with us you will have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives, but you will also get perks such as discounted or free access to our events and classes, and most importantly, collaborative input in what we do here. Your ideas are important to us, and as a volunteer, we want you to feel like you’re part of our community: one that celebrates who you are and supports your journey.
HIGH POTENTIAL, NO PRESSURES
Our community thrives in a space where countless delightful interactions could happen, but none are obligated to occur. Think of it as “high possibility, low expectations.” Outside of our general requirements of respect, you are under no obligation to interact with anyone in any particular way. This makes our space ideal for new faces and seasoned community members alike.
HIGH POTENTIAL, NO PRESSURES
Our events aren’t the product of one person hosting a party for pay; they’re the result of a community coming together and creating something new. Everyone who attends is expected to co-create: money, time, energy, enthusiasm, work, intention, example, concern and/or awareness. Have ideas, games, art, music to share? Want to bring them to life with us?
A FOUNDATION OF TRUST
Our gatherings are magical because of trust. We fiercely protect each member’s privacy, encourage honest risk communication, and take diligent care of our shared environments. It’s our collective respect and integrity that fortify this safe space.
CLEAR AND PRESENT CONSENT
Upholding consent goes beyond preventing harm; it’s about affirming everyone’s freedom to fully and joyfully agree to their interactions. It’s through this affirmation that our spaces thrive with genuine, unreserved participation.
INCLUSION AND DIVERSITY
We’re committed to inclusivity. Our community is a tapestry of individuals from diverse racial, ethnic, and social backgrounds, including all gender identities and expressions. We encourage everyone to engage with empathy and curiosity, always asking rather than assuming someone’s identity or preferences.
Our space is and always will be wheelchair accessible, with multiple spaces for varying sensory needs.
